Why podiatry? What advice would you give an undergraduate student interested in this profession?
I always wanted to become a surgeon and once I shadowed in the podiatric medical field, I fell in love with the aspect of being able to perform a variety of different surgical procedures relating to the foot and ankle. I was able to see a lot of different surgeries such as amputations and reconstructive procedures. Being able to see these only solidified my decision to go into the field. I have also had a strong interest in diabetic wound care, and shadowing allowed me the opportunity to see how wounds are treated. Diabetes is prevalent in podiatric patients and I would like to use my position as a way to spread awareness to this grueling disease.
Podiatrists can actually specialize in a variety of areas…
I would advise any undergraduate student who is interested in podiatry to shadow a podiatric physician. That is the only way to see a day in the life of podiatrists and what we do. Podiatrists can actually specialize in a variety of areas such as wound care, surgery, and dermatology.I only learned that after I spent time researching the field as an undergraduate student. Being a podiatric medical student, I can say that it is a rigorous program. I would advise undergraduate students to make sure that they have a good GPA and MCAT score to be a competitive applicant. Having those things will help a student be prepared for the rigor of podiatric medical school. While these aspects are very important, being a well-rounded student will help the most. Students should be involved in extracurricular activities such as school clubs and community volunteering. This can help students stand out when they are applying.
I believe that outreach is a very important aspect in connecting undergraduate students to those in the podiatric profession. I would advise students to always ask questions to those in the profession so that they can learn more about it. Podiatric medical students can give a detailed and personalized anecdote to those undergraduate students and I believe it can help those students who are interested in going into podiatry.
